Gelatin Project:
Choose two similar pans or dishes large enough in diameter for a child to place his hand. Clear glass or plastic allows for a better visual.
Prepare Jell-O or other gelatin product according to package directions.
Pour gelatin into each dish to fill a solid bottom.
Refrigerate according to package directions.
Once firm, have your child place an unwashed, dirty hand into one dish and make a handprint.
The child may continue to generously, though gently, touch the surface of the Jell-O.
Next, cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap.
Leave the second dish untouched as your “control” dish and cover with plastic wrap.
Place both dishes in the refrigerator for several days while observing.
Discuss with your child the growth development between the two dishes and the factors involved.
Use this opportunity to discuss the germs and bacteria on the hands, and the importance of proper hand washing.
