Grow Together

giving kids the roots to help them sprout

Would love to start a discussion on this disorder. Is anyone struggling through, working with or helping assist a child with SPD?

What is your child's age?
How do you cope?
What is your biggest fear?
What has been your triumph in this journey?

Let's start chatting and support each other! If you are parenting a child with SPD, you probably crave the adult conversation without the interruptions and demanding behaviors.

Let's chat!

My DS is 3.5, and seems to have the less commonly diagnosed sensory seeking SPD issues. This means whenever he gets bored or things get too familiar he gets dysregulated (and starts literally bouncing off the walls). We try to work into each day lots of sensory integration activities, like heavy work, jumping, walking, etc.

I think the main problem for me is dealing with him day to day. I have to engage him constantly or he stimulates himself usually by doing dangerous things. He hurts himself (accidentally) very often, and seems to have no sense of fear and never seems to learn from injuries. I do fear that he'll hurt himself badly one of these days. We've been to the E.R. many times.

He's such an amazing person, though. So energetic and inspired, and always helping me learn new things.

We're currently waiting on the results of a big sensory evaluation we did which is supposed to finally tell us whether some of our daughter's issues are sensory- or emotionally-based. The result is the same - major food issues, sensitivity to noises, etc., but hopefully if we can get some indications as to where they're coming from we can know better how to help her work through them.

Michelle, I will definitely be taking part in this discussion. :-)

Thanks for starting it!

So far Peanut has not shown any problems with SPD, but it's always a concern somewhere in the back of my head (along with every other thing a child with Ds can develop!) I'll be interested to watch the discussion even though I am not dealing with this problem. Peanut IS starting to show some mild signs of OCD. I hope they remain mild.
