giving kids the roots to help them sprout

With so many parents of young children following this great site, I'm wondering how many of you are aware of the dangers of BPA and where it lurks. There was so much talk last year about the importance of using BPA-free water bottles and baby bottles, but did you know that this "gender-bending" chemical is commonly used in everyday items?

BPA was initially discovered to be an synthetic estrogen in the '30s and by the 50's it was being used to harden plastic. Now, it's used in the epoxy liner of soda cans and canned foods, as well as in any hard plastic glasses, water bottles...the list can go on. Check out this pretty thorough list on The Daily Green. Acidic can foods are particularly troublesome.

So, why is BPA bad for you? As an endocrine disruptor, it's linked to so many diseases. Studies link BPA to breast cancer, heart disease in women, prostate cancer, diabetes, and liver cancer. Also, according to this article, The National Toxicology Program, earlier this month, finalized its conclusion that the health risk to reproduction and development posed by Bisphenol-A cannot be ruled out. There is "some concern" (a 3 on a 5-point scale) according to the agency, that Bisphenol-A affects the prostate gland, brain and development of fetuses, infants and children.

Avoid canned foods, canned soda, and eating/drinking from hard plastic containers. Buy your baby formula in powdered form. As a precaution, never put your plastic containers in the microwave. And, use a completely recyclable stainless or Sigg water bottle that is guaranteed BPA-free. Do not use cheap aluminum bottles. I've been seeing so many in stores, but they leach aluminum and that's not good for you either!

I started a company to sell reusable water bottles over a year ago. (H2Ox2.com)I did it mainly for environmental reasons. However, when I started reading about leaching and BPA, I chose to stick with metal bottles. I've always been the sort of person that errs on the side of caution. I may even can some of my own tomatoes this year - if I can work up the nerve!
